Terms of Service — Focused Reader

Effective date: 20 July 2026
App: Focused Reader (Android)
Developer: Eliáš Baltazár Špilák
Contact: elias.spilak@gmail.com

These terms govern your use of the Focused Reader app. By installing or using the app, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

The short version: Focused Reader is a reading tool. You bring your own books, or download free public-domain ones. It's a subscription with a free trial, billed and cancellable through Google Play. We don't store your data, and we can't promise the app is perfect.

1. What the app does

Focused Reader displays books you provide — EPUB, PDF, or text files you import from your own device — one word at a time, to help you read with fewer distractions. It also lets you browse and download books from third-party public-domain catalogs.

2. Your licence to use it

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for your own reading. You may not resell, redistribute, reverse-engineer, or attempt to circumvent the app's subscription controls.

3. Your books and content

You are responsible for the files you import. You must have the legal right to read and store any book you add to the app. Focused Reader does not supply commercial books, does not remove or bypass digital rights management (DRM), and cannot open DRM-protected files.

Your books, bookmarks, and reading progress are stored on your device. We have no access to them and hold no copy. Keeping your own backups is your responsibility — the app provides an export feature for this.

4. Free books from third-party catalogs

The app can download public-domain books from third-party services such as Project Gutenberg. Those services are operated independently; we do not control their catalogs, availability, accuracy, or terms, and we are not responsible for their content.

5. Subscription, trial, and billing

Focused Reader is offered as a subscription with a free trial. Current prices and trial length are shown in the app before you subscribe.

6. Refunds and your right to withdraw

Purchases are made through Google Play and are subject to Google Play's refund policy. Refund requests are handled by Google, not by us, though you are welcome to contact us and we will help where we can.

If you are a consumer in the European Union, you normally have a 14-day right of withdrawal for digital purchases. Because access to the app's paid features begins immediately on purchase, you are asked to consent to immediate performance, and this right lapses once delivery has begun. Your statutory rights are otherwise unaffected.

7. Changes to the app and to pricing

We may add, change, or remove features over time. If we change the subscription price, the new price applies only to renewals after you have been notified as required by Google Play, and you may cancel before it takes effect.

8. Acceptable use

Do not use the app to infringe copyright, to distribute unlawful material, or in any way that breaks the law where you live.

9. Disclaimer

The app is provided "as is" and "as available". We do our best to make it work well, but we do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with every device or every file. Automatic text extraction from EPUB and PDF files is imperfect by nature, and some books may not render as intended.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited — including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer, your mandatory statutory rights are unaffected.

Your reading data exists only on your device. We strongly recommend using the export feature to keep your own backups; we cannot recover data that is lost when a device is lost, reset, or the app is uninstalled.

11. Termination

You may stop using the app at any time by uninstalling it and cancelling any active subscription in Google Play. We may suspend access if these terms are seriously or repeatedly breached.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The effective date above will change, and material changes will be reflected in the app's store listing. Continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised terms.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Slovak Republic. If you are a consumer, you also benefit from any mandatory protections of the law of the country where you live, and you may bring proceedings there.

If you are a consumer in the European Union, you may also use the European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution platform to resolve a dispute out of court.
